The Sclafani family began in the food industry in the late 1800s when Marie Sclafani and her husband came to the U.S. from Italy with their four sons. The business stayed in the family for many generations with a growing line of products that included canned tomatoes and vegetables, pasta, olive oil and other Italian specialties. In the 1950s the family pioneered the handling of bulk tomatoes, and the company became a leading producer of canned tomato products. This is when Dominick Sclafani, a culinary talent, developed a unique fully prepared pizza sauce in 1950. He named the sauce Don Pepino®. The sauce became one of the company’s best sellers, and the original recipe is still used to this day.
Few companies prosper for more than 100 years. Today, Don Pepino pizza and pasta sauces are recognized as some of the finest in the industry. The secret is in the quality of the fresh New Jersey tomatoes used to make every recipe. Don Pepino products carrying the Jersey Fresh® logo are made from fresh Jersey tomatoes, grown near the Don Pepino and Sclafani® packing facility in southern New Jersey.
